Recurrent Corneal Erosion Sucks

Ok. It’s been six months since my left eye was injured in a freak accident. It was a “slicing” type corneal abrasion (which sounds much worse than it really is — trust me), which happens to be the most difficult type of abrasion to heal since the basement membrane was damaged.

I had been using Muro 5% eye ointment every night for a month, just like the opthamologist prescribed. This weekend, I forgot to bring the ointment home. I told myself, “It’s been a month… let’s try to go without it!”

Wrong.

I woke up this morning with my eye hurting. I guess it was dry in the house and my eyelid fused to my cornea (this happens to everyone), and when I woke up… BAM. The injury is reopened and I’m in agony. Well, not quite agony, but’s it’s no picnic.

So. Now I have two options:

  • Start the Muro 5% stuff all over again.
  • Go to the opthamologist again, where he’ll do a procedure called anterior stromal puncture (fun), which will allow the cornea to heal in a more even fashion.

For the curious, go here.
