Salon has an excellent article on the rise of Bootleg Culture, i.e. home-grown, unauthorized remixes and pairings of songs. We are striving to become a total hive-minded culture, it would seem, as creativity and authorship take a backseat to re-creation and recombination. Back in 1993, I was noticing the phenomenon that teenagers and young adults relate to each other these days through popular culture references as much as they do through original thoughts and expressions. This whole weblog thing — especially where I pass a link on like this — is more of the same.
