Which leads me to the next thing. I’m of the opinion that there should be heaps of obsolete hardware out there. Enough to build a machine to run Linux/FreeBSD, serve my MP3s, and use as a file server/tape backup device. So. I’ll cast the net and see if any of you folks out there have any of the following items you’d be willing to part with for cheap (or free!):
- A Slot 1 Intel Pentium III <= 800 MHz
- An ATX form-factor PC case — one that cools decently
- An ATX power supply >= 300W
- An old PCI SCSI adapter of any sort (dual channel would be cool, but not necessary)
- A DDS2 or DDS3 tape drive
- A PCI 100/10 Mbps Ethernet card
- A crappy 2D PCI video card
I’ll probably buy a new hard drive, as I don’t trust used ones unless they are just spares that were never used.
