Happy New Year

Well, it’s 2003. I think I’m ready for it.

The Sprocket is not really finished moving, but it’s been almost a month since I last wrote any entry at all, so it’s high time I got back into the swing of things.

Started reading Dave Eggers’ memoir A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius yesterday. Since about 1999, I’ve been an on and off reader of Eggers’ online version of his quarterly magazine, McSweeney’s — more off than on, actually, as I’ve found his and his proteges’ writing to be uneven. Some of it is laugh-out loud funny while some of it is a little too self-conscious and ironic for my taste.

That said, AHWOSG is surprisingly good so far.

I seem to remember there being a “Reading” printed in Harper’s Magazine which contained a statement from Dave’s sister, Beth, who seemed bitter and upset about her portrayal in the book. It’s hard to say if she was genuinely aggrieved; it’s possible that her brother put her up to it to generate controversy surrounding his book.

We rang in the New Year at a friend’s house (pictures forthcoming).

By the way, Dick Clark really scares me. Shouldn’t he be dead yet? I wonder if the makers of Botox have considered making him a spokesperson?

Resolutions for the new year:

  • Be a better husband to my wife and a better friend to my friends.
  • Continue to keep in shape. Lift some weights.
  • Be brave, and in love, at all times, even when it might not be called for.
  • Take more pictures, leave more footprints.
  • Keep my finances in order. Actually use Quicken.
  • Remember to be frank and honest about my feelings.
  • And, finally… stop making so many lists.

That’s about it for now.
