Textism: Using PHP 4.1 or better to reduce your website’s bandwidth usage. Useful if your site doesn’t already use something like Apache’s mod_gzip. There’s also a link to a test script that will tell you if your page is already being sent by the webserver with compression enabled.
I’ve changed all of my pages (with the exception of the RSS/RDF feed) to use this little hack. So far, so good.
It would be ideal if Pair Networks — my webspace provider — would install mod_gzip on their servers. However, doing so might not be in their best interest, since they charge a fee for excessive bandwidth usage. I think I’ll ask them to do so, anyways. We’ll see what happens.
