June Carter Cash, wife of Johnny Cash, died today.

I admit that I am a latecomer to Cash fandom, and yes, the rendition of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” is largely responsible for my recent conversion. While I don’t know that much about June, I will never forget her standing on the staircase in the “Hurt” video, watching her husband declare all of his inadequacies and shortcomings by way of Trent Reznor’s lyrics. She looked like a woman who had seen these outbursts of self-pity before, but loved him dearly enough to carry him through this.
