Looks like McCain’s amendment to the DoD Appropriations act of 2006 (H.R. 2863) regulating the use of torture won hands down, 90-9 (1 abstaining). The usual asshats, of course, voted against it; see the roll call.
It’s a good bet the bill will eventually pass (it’s an appropriations bill, after all) and land on the President’s desk, where he has repeatedly promised to veto it if it contained any language about limiting interrogation practices.
If Bush vetos this bill, it would be the first time he’s vetoed anything at all. I for one, hope that he thinks better and signs the bill, as we should be reducing torture, not encouraging it.
My favorite grafs from the WaPo article:
In his closing speech, McCain said terrorists “hold in contempt” international conventions “such as the Geneva Conventions and the treaty on torture.”
“I know that,” he said. “But we’re better than them, and we are the stronger for our faith.”
That is the vision of America we should be defending. Thank you, Mr. McCain.
