[This is a progress report on my attempt to lose some poundage. See the original post for context.]
Well, January has gone well. Here’s some chart porn1 to prove it.

By the numbers:
- I weighed 235.2 pounds on 2 January
- On 31 January, I weighed in at 228.2 lbs; a seven pound decrease.
- My goal is 160 pounds by the end of the year, and I have 68.2 more pounds to lose.
So, what did I do differently?
Well, I started to eat a hell of a lot less. Well, a bit less. I still occasionally ate some spectacularly bad foods2, but since being laid off, I ate out at restaurants much less frequently. This meant my consumption of soups, salads and sandwiches for lunch increased while my {burger, thai, burrito, omgfriedwhatnot} consumption decreased. I think I probably saved some money, too.
In addition, instead of always thinking that I should go to the gym, I’m actually going to the gym. Currently, I’m striving for at least three cardio workouts a week with two or three visits for strength training. Frankly, I forgot how good exercising feels after a year or two of doing little to no exercise at all. For cardio, it’s 30 minutes on the Precor Elliptical trainer and for strength training, a circuit of machines. Yes, yes, free weights are better, but massive bulking up is not what I’m after. Modest improvement will do just fine.
Onward to February!
1 Charts were made by a nifty little iPhone application for tracking weight called Weightbot.
2 Like the night that I ate fried pickles, a burger, and onion rings at Leesville Tap Room. Not to mention beer. Ow, my stomach lining. Also, it showed up on my chart (see 16 January). NEVAR AGAIN.
